Designing and Detailing Air Barrier Connections at Windows, Curtain Walls, and Storefronts

The Air Barrier (AB) requirements mandated by the 2012 International Building Code (IB) have brought about significant changes to detailing at fenestrations. Currently, insulated glass (IG) assemblies are designed based on building design and owner requirements. The corresponding AB transition details are often developed using the basis of design and manufacturer’s suggested detailing. The overall connectivity of the AB at fenestrations must be considered in the design phase as product compatibility and functional constructability of the transitions may dictate different fenestration configurations or air barrier materials.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review typical fenestration and transitional detailing concerns to include preferred transition details.
  2. Review the most common materials utilized in providing AB connectivity at fenestrations and transitions.
  3. Discuss the difference in detailing conventional windows and those with integral (new construction) flanges.
  4. Discuss wall and sill flashing basics.

As an Associate for Gale, Mr. Bohlen oversees the design and evaluation of all building façade and roofing related projects for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Derek Ziese, P.E.  has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has five years of experience providing building envelope and structural engineering services. Mr. Ziese has performed investigations, condition assessments, repair design, and construction observation services for a variety projects including façade systems, roof systems, subgrade waterproofing, and historic structures.
